The Vitale Barberis Canonico Fabric Mill

Posted by Craig Schroeder on

One of the most important steps in creating a custom made to measure garment is picking the correct fabric for the occasion. This can often be a daunting process because there are a variety of materials like wool, linen, cotton, seersucker, and silk, and these all have their very own unique properties. We do things differently here at CMMP.  We curate every single fabric that's in our showrooms.  We import fabric from the best mills in the world, including Vitale Barberis Canonico, an iconic woolen mill in Italy.

We had the opportunity to visit the the mill itself, located in Biella, Italy, the Wool Capital of the World.  This town of only 46,000 is nestled at the foot of the Italian Alps and has small Alpine rivers and lakes surrounding it. These Alpine rivers carry the soft water that washes the wool. This soft water is what Biella is known for and has made it the headquarters for processing wool for over 1000 years and home to so many of the famed Italian woolen mills.

As the world's oldest fabric mill, Vitale Barberis Canonico, has stood the test of time by marrying the concept of classic with a new contemporary twist. The 13th generation of the Canonico family, who is at the helm now, brings a new sense of innovation and a stricter focus on bringing sustainability into each piece of wool they create. VBC is at the forefront of sustainability in the industry by implementing a state of the art water conservation system, recycling and getting 100% of its energy from renewable sources. A true icon in the world of menswear and carrying that "Made in Italy" stamp with pride and ingenuity.

If you're looking for a timeless and classic navy/black/grey wool fabric for your suit or a chalk-stripe, then VBC is the fabric we suggest. Traditional but innovative fabrics make their fabrics a top choice for our past clients. Make an appointment with us today and let us show you the dynamic range of fabrics we have hand picked from VBC.
